Teen Patti Variants: Every Popular Twist, Explained

Muflis, AK47, Pot Blind, 3 Patti War and Zandu all start from the same three-card game. Each one changes a single rule, and that one change is enough to make old habits wrong. Here's what each version does and how it changes the way you should play.

  • AK47A, K, 4, 7 wild
  • Pot BlindBet without looking
  • 3 Patti WarQuick head-to-head

One Rule Changed, a Whole New Game

The base game of Teen Patti is so simple that people have been adding house rules to it for as long as anyone can remember. Every Diwali card party has at least one uncle who insists "tonight we play with jokers" or "tonight the lowest hand wins". Some of those twists stuck around, got names, and now show up as separate tables in apps.

What's useful to know is that almost none of them rewrite the whole game. The deal is still three cards each. Betting still works with chaal, pack, blind and seen. Usually just one thing moves: which hand is best, which cards count as wild, or whether you get to look at your cards at all. That's why someone who already knows the classic game can usually follow a new variant within a hand or two.

But "follow" and "play well" are different. The one rule that changes is exactly the one your instincts were trained on. So the first few hands of any new variant are where most people give money away.

Muflis: The Game Turned Upside Down

In Muflis the weakest hand by normal rules wins the pot. Everything else stays the same: the cards, the betting rounds, the choice between blind and seen. Only the goal is reversed.

That sounds easy until you're actually holding cards. Say you pick up A-A-A. In classic Teen Patti that's the best hand possible. In Muflis it's close to worthless. Meanwhile a scrappy 2-3-5 of mixed suits, the kind of hand you would pack without a second thought normally, is now something to bet on.

The hardest adjustment is with pairs and sequences. A pair, even a low one, beats high-card hands in classic play, so in Muflis any pair becomes a liability. A beginner's mistake I see all the time is getting excited about a "good" hand out of pure habit. Read more on the Muflis Teen Patti page.

AK47: Four Wild Ranks

In AK47, every Ace, King, Four and Seven is wild. A wild card can stand in for any other card to complete a hand, so strong hands appear much more often than in the classic game. The rankings get reshaped too: the top hand becomes A-K-4-7 rather than three aces.

Here's what that feels like at the table. You hold 9-9-K. In classic play that's a pair of nines. In AK47 the King is wild and turns it into a trail of nines. Now imagine everyone else at the table is getting that kind of help too.

The practical lesson: a hand that would be comfortably strong in classic Teen Patti is much less safe here, because opponents reach big hands more often. Pairs lose a lot of value. Check how the app ranks wild-card hands before you commit money. The AK47 Teen Patti page has the details.

Pot Blind, 3 Patti War and Zandu

Pot Blind

Pot Blind is built around blind betting. You're usually staking without looking at your cards, and the pot keeps growing as players raise. With the cards taken out of the decision, what's left is nerve, timing and a feel for when others are likely to fold. People who enjoy bluffing tend to like it. People who like to know what they're holding often find it uncomfortable, and that's fine. See the Pot Blind page.

3 Patti War

3 Patti War keeps the standard cards and the normal ranking order. What changes is the pace: the focus moves to quick head-to-head showdowns instead of long pots with many players, so rounds finish fast. Of all the variants here, it's the smallest step away from classic play. The flip side of the speed is that loose, careless bets add up quickly. Details on the 3 Patti War page.

Zandu

Zandu adds face-up joker cards to the table. Any card in your hand that matches a joker's value turns wild. Because you normally see at least one joker before betting, an ordinary hand can suddenly become a strong one, and so can everyone else's. The skill is in watching the table cards closely and thinking about what they do for the other players, not just for you. Find it on the Zandu page.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Variant What changes Ranking order Suits players who...
Muflis Lowest hand wins Reversed enjoy unlearning habits
AK47 A, K, 4 and 7 are wild Reshaped, top hand is A-K-4-7 like chasing big hands
Pot Blind Blind bets, growing pot Standard like bluffing and pressure
3 Patti War Fast head-to-head rounds Standard are short on time
Zandu Face-up jokers make matching cards wild Standard, with wilds read the table carefully

How Your Strategy Has to Shift

The skills that carry across every version are the boring ones. Knowing the standard hand rankings perfectly, keeping bets steady, not chasing losses. Those don't change.

What does change is which hands deserve your money:

  • In Muflis, value the hands you'd normally throw away, and be suspicious of anything that looks "strong".
  • In AK47 and Zandu, raise the bar. With wild cards around, a pair or a low sequence wins less often than you're used to.
  • In Pot Blind, patience and timing matter more than the cards, because you often don't know them.
  • In 3 Patti War, tight play wins. Rounds end quickly, so a string of loose calls can drain a budget in minutes.

Our guide on how to win at Teen Patti covers bankroll and table-reading habits in more depth. Nearly all of it applies to the variants as well.

Which One to Try First

If you want the gentlest step, start with 3 Patti War, since the rules are basically what you already know. If you want your brain properly tested, go for Muflis. AK47 and Zandu both bring wild cards and reward careful attention. Pot Blind is for people who enjoy the bluff more than the cards.

And if you're new to three-card games altogether, don't start with any of these. Play some classic Teen Patti first and read the rules guide. Variants make a lot more sense when you know what's being changed.

All of these are real-money games for adults aged 18 and above. Deposits and withdrawals go through UPI in rupees. Real-money play carries financial risk and is restricted in some Indian states, so check your local rules first and only play with money you can afford to lose.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main Teen Patti variants?
The popular ones are Muflis (lowest hand wins), AK47 (ace, king, four and seven are wild), Pot Blind (blind betting with a growing pot), 3 Patti War (fast head-to-head rounds) and Zandu (face-up jokers that act as wild cards).
How does Muflis change the game?
Muflis reverses the goal so the lowest-ranked hand wins instead of the highest. The cards, deal and betting stay the same, but the weakest hand scoops the pot.
What makes AK47 Teen Patti different?
Four ranks — ace, king, four and seven — become wild, and the best hand turns into A-K-4-7 rather than three aces, which reshapes the rankings and makes big hands easier to build.
Do all variants use the same hand rankings?
Most keep the standard order, but some change it. Muflis flips it so low wins, while AK47 adds wild ranks and a new top hand. Always check a variant's rule before you bet.
Are variants harder to learn than classic Teen Patti?
Not really. Each one changes a single rule on top of the base game, so a Teen Patti player can usually pick up a new version within a hand or two.
Can I play Teen Patti variants in India?
Yes, these skill-led card games are played for Player Rewards by many Indians, though state rules differ, so check your local position and only sign up if you are over 18.
